Drawbacks of the Raw Diet

Here's a list of some of the drawbacks to feeding the raw diet.

Buffalo Wings. <g>  Since the boom in popularity of this appetizer, chicken wings have gone WAY up in price.  Which is sad because they are a good RMB!

Finding someplace to get the RMBs.  Not all groceries carry the variety of raw meaty bones that a good diet should have.  So you may have to hunt for them.

Buying in bulk (if necessary) means you must have a freezer dedicated to your dogs.  Our freezers (yes, we now have two of them) cost about $300 each but we’ve saved at least 5 times that much by being able to purchase in bulk.

December 2003 Update - we recently added a third freezer and a second refrigerator to our house!  The third freezer was a used upright that now houses all OUR frozen foods.  And the new refrigerator is in the basement - in the dog food prep area.  I use this fridge to hold the eggs, Salmon Oil, and any thawed items waiting to be fed.

The prep time.  If you think it’s a lot of work to scoop a bunch of dry kibble into a bowl then you’ll think the raw diet is WAY too much work.  But if you have an extra 10 – 20 minutes to spare every morning and evening, your dogs will thank you for it!

Vets.  Most vets get only a couple hours of nutritional study during vet school and that is usually presented by a representative of the dog food companies (like Purina).  What do you think they are telling them?  If you’ve spent more than a couple hours studying and researching raw diets and spent more than a couple hours figuring out what your dog needs and how much to give them, then you have MORE knowledge in nutrition than most vets!!  While there are vets out there that advocate a raw diet (one of our vets feeds it to her dog), they are outnumbered by the other type.  Don’t be discouraged if your vet is unhappy with your dogs diet.  YOU know your dog.  YOU can see the improvements.

Non-raw feeding pet owners.  “Gasp!!  You feed your dogs RAW CHICKEN BONES!!!!  OH MY GOD – don’t you know that will KILL them?!?!?”  If we had a chicken wing for each time we’ve heard that – our dogs would be in raw-fed heaven! <g>  When people react like that we calmly explain that RAW bones are safe – COOKED bones are not.  If they continue to rant and rage, we simply tune them out.  We don’t waste our time trying to explain to people who are not interested in improving their pets’ quality of life.
