Since I'm feeding 6 dogs - 4 of them large ones - cost is an important factor in feeding my guys. I can usually feed my dogs a do-it-myself raw diet for between $.75 - $1.00 per pound of food fed. That does not include the supplements - but then again neither do the pre-mades. The pre-mades can run you over $3.00 per pound! When you are feeding small dogs and only go through a few pounds a week - that might not be a big deal. But I go through over 200 lbs of raw food each month. That's a difference of $400!! With pre-mades you need to carefully read the label to be exactly sure what's in the package. Many pre-mades contain more than just "chicken" or "beef". For example, this is the ingredients listing of a popular pre-made food: "Organic chicken or lamb muscle meat; minced organ meat; finely ground, real, raw bones; pureed carrots, broccoli, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and apples; powdered organic alfalfa; powdered organic kelp; farm-fresh whole eggs (including shells); fresh, minced garlic; fresh parsley; raw, un-pasteurized honey; organic, unfiltered, un-pasteurized apple cider vinegar; ground, organic flax seeds; and Grapefruit Seed Extract" My boy Tazer has allergy issues with things like Flax seed, alfalfa and kelp. And I don't use much if any fruit in my dogs diet. By
making the diet myself I know EXACTLY what is going in their bowls ... and
into them. And I can control things like how much bone Remi gets
versus Riggs.
